Start with the work—not the promised result
A useful conversation should explain what the firm will investigate, which documents it needs, who will handle the case, and what it charges. A firm cannot responsibly guarantee an IRS decision before reviewing your circumstances.
Bring these questions to the first conversation
- Who will handle my case? Ask for the person’s name, role, qualifications, and whether representation before the taxing authority is included.
- What exactly am I paying for? Distinguish an initial investigation from filing returns, submitting a resolution request, negotiating, or ongoing compliance work.
- What are the total potential fees? Request a written agreement covering scope, payment schedule, additional charges, cancellation, and refunds.
- What could make me ineligible? Discuss filing compliance, income, assets, expenses, and any active deadlines.
- Can I handle this directly? Ask the firm to explain what it adds beyond the IRS’s own tools.
- How will I receive updates? Ask who to contact and how to obtain copies of submitted documents.
Do not confuse an inquiry with representation
Submitting our form requests a referral. It does not hire a firm or authorize anyone to contact the IRS on your behalf. Representation requires the appropriate separate arrangements and authorizations.
Recognize pressure before paying
Be cautious if a caller guarantees a tax reduction before reviewing your finances, claims a special government connection, or pressures you to pay immediately. Ask for the total fee and refund terms in writing. A request submitted here does not hire that firm.
Protect your information
Do not give account passwords or a full Social Security number to an unsolicited caller. Verify the firm independently and use its secure document process after deciding to work with it.

Check qualifications for the service you need; return preparation and representation are different services.
